Tissue Transplant, wound repair and severe blood loss on a 35 kg Dog

Updated: May 17, 2022

Bonnie, 8 year Staffordshire American Bull Terrier from San Raphael, Bulacan was hit by a two car in the middle of the day on 10th of February 2022.

A broken rib, intact forearm bones shows in the x-ray. But severe wound in the left arm make it impossible to close it. Initial surgery was done in Bulacan, but after few days. The surgery failed leading to necrotizing wound and wound infection.

Series of laboratory are done to verify Bonnie’s status. Complete blood count reveal, normal level of blood with high infection Due to the wound. Blood chemistry analysis gave a high value on liver enzymes.

As protocol, a central line was given to Bonnie and treat her wound for the mean time while stabilizing her body.

After few days when the liver enzymes are stable and back to normal, a tissue implant from her own skin was implanted into her arm. Few days to go, while waiting for the body not to reject the implant a sudden problem came up.

Another wave of problem: Receding hematocrit leading to blood loss due to NSAIDs.

Signs: Inappetence, black vomit and black stool with hematocrit going low level.

Laboratory are done again, the kidney and liver are doing fine. The blood hematocrit goes low from 38% to 30% to shocking 24% down on just 3 days.

Treatment plan: Proper time of feeding, antacids, vitamin B complex with iron and Blood Transfusion.
